Auditions! - On The Verge

Directed by Justin Atkins

Auditions April 14 at 2:00 pm - Newport PAC Studio Theatre

Newport's local celebrity actor Justin Atkins is donning the director's cap to bring ON THE VERGE or THE GEOGRAPHY OF YEARNING, the acclaimed play by Eric Overmyer, to the Newport Performing Arts Center in August 2018. Smartly written, with witty wordplay and nuanced pop references, the production will require some serious talent all the way around. Interested?

The year is 1888 when Mary, Fanny, and Alex, three women who are each intrepid world explorers in their own right, band together to conquer Terra Incognita, the last and most mysterious of unexplored territories. As they bushwhack their way through jungles, brave treacherous ice sheets, and negotiate passage across a bottomless Gorge, the ladies reminisce about their past adventures and sort out their personality differences. They encounter a chameleonic cannibal, an adorable young Yeti, and a Troll demanding a toll, as well as a number of mysterious artifacts: egg beaters, dirigibles, political campaign buttons, and newspaper clippings from the 1900s. On this one-way journey through space and time, each lady discovers her own unique destiny in the beautiful, loud, and brightly lit future. Eric Overmyer’s On the Verge, or, The Geography of Yearning is a romping meditation on the outer and inner frontiers of the human condition, full of lyrical and hilarious dialogue and imagery both beautiful and surreal.

Mary The oldest member of the lady explorers' expedition. She is utterly devoted to studying and experiencing the future, both from an objective and subjective perspective.
Fanny The most conservative of the group in all aspects: socially, politically, and morally. She is the only married member of the group.
Alex The youngest of the group, and she allows her age to make up a considerable amount of her personality. She is typically forgetful, and tends to daydream.

NOTE: All characters below to be portrayed by a single actor.
Alphonse An enigmatic personality—German accent yet native to the jungle the ladies are navigating when they find him.
Grover Fanny's husband, a shy banker from the American midwest.
The Yeti A monster whose bark (incoherent, gutteral roaring) is much worse than his bite.
The Gorge Troll A cross between Fonzie and a modern beat poet.
Mr. Coffee A gentlemen dressed in a fine white suit, perhaps the angel, or spirit, of death.
Madame Nhu A psychic of sorts, offering confusing fortune cookie advice, e.g. "Praise your wife, even if it frightens her."
Gus A fresh-faced American teenager with boundless energy.
Nicky Paradise A seductive lady-killer who frequently bursts into song in the middle of conversation.
